In a sailboat, which is the "mizzen chains," referring too?
I've been reading CS Forrester "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower" and among many other naval obscure references, lists the "bow string" sometimes, and the "major networks" and "mizzen chains" too. It is the anchor cable! The context is when boarding a ship or boat leaving a smaller boat. Spoken passage about him "struggling with clumsiness in the mizzen chains and looking to the side of the blade, while the man on the boat can "barely reach the strings with his boat hook. When they reach the another ship, "the main chains of the brigade were much smaller than the mizzen chains," the other "but this time I had to go up" to get to them. Furthermore, the two sailors who went before him stand looking at him, but says if it's the cover are. Anyway, it's not anywhere in the "Glossary of nautical terms" on Wikipedia. Anyone have any idea what this term means?
I think these are the chainplates for stays of holding mizzen. The mast support cables smaller back (mizzen) are attached to the boat with chainplates. I imagine that they could become very large.
