How can I transfer a video clip from my DVR to my PC?

I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 DVR and need to copy a portion of a recorded show to my computer. There is a USB port in the front of the DVR, but then what? The DVR only seems to have an option to record to VCR.

FYI, my computer runs on XP.
It’s not a Dish DVR. It’s from my cable company.

Hi Lulubell,

You need a device like DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam’s for $59.95.

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I think it was $39.95 but I am not positive. You can check one out here http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress-dx2.htm

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

Is there a high definition DVR with dual tuners that do not need to activate?

I am looking for a dual tuner HD DVR preferably with the support cable card, but I will not have to pay a monthly fee. I just want to buy the box directly. Does anyone know of one?

Motorola makes a hand, the cable companies use. You would have to rent from your cable company … at least not Tivo:)

Connect the output of your DVR into the input of your VHS. Connect the output of the VHS to your TV so you can monitor what you are doing.

Motorola DVR/HDTV box

I have a black cable box and a new motorla dvr/hdtv cable box from comcast. How do I hook this up? Do I hook up the colored wires to my TV and transfer the two cable from the black box to the new motorola box? I’m not getting any signal…

You put the colored wires from cable box to TV.

Then you plug them both to a power source (lol)

Put the card into the card slot (if they give you one)

Call or go to your local Comcast office to get them to activate the box.

And you’re done!

Can a TiVo DVR record shows without having to pay the monthly fee?

In other words, you can use as a VCR with a timer, only without the cassette?

No. Not without some serious hacking or modding anyway, and if there was a way, many people would. I'm pretty sure the baby they have quite blocked. There are free alternatives to TiVo but Windows Media Center is very good, so it is MythTV (the latter requires a job).

Could he use a digital cable box (Scientific Atlanta EXPLORER 8249HDC) and a TV tuner for my PC?

Not directly. Cable TV boxes are not outlets that can connect to PC inputs. If common to install a TV card in your PC, you can use the entries in the TV card.

Setting up a Comcast Motorola modem but getting ‘no connectivity’ due to router IP address?

I am trying to set up my Comcast Motorola SB5120 modem. All cables are connected properly, but when I run the install CD it says I have no connectivity. When talking to a Comcast rep, he mentioned my IP address is that of a router (192.168.100.2) although there is currently no router connected to the laptop or modem. I have tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew to no avail – I still have the same router IP address. Is there a way to refresh to a new IP address so that I can get connectivity with my Comcast modem? The last couple of times I have worked with the Comcast rep, they transfer me to a Microsoft customer service rep who is unable to assist me. Thanks so much.

192.168.100.2 is what’s called a non-routable IP address. This means it can’t be used for internet connectivity, since internet routers won’t route them to other routers. So yes, that’s a huge problem if you want to get out to the internet and don’t have a DSL/Cable router handling the IP addresses.

It seems that your computer isn’t picking up an IP address from Comcast. Since this should not be the case, the first thought I’d have is that you are using a static IP address rather than getting one assigned by comcast. This needs to be changed in your network settings. To check this, do the following:

Open control panel (this assumes Vista) and open the Network and Sharing Center control panel

Find the text link that says View Status (it should be to the right, less than halfway down the page)

A new window should open. Find the Properties button and click on it.

Find “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and double-click on it.

Make sure “Obtain an IP address automatically” is checked.

This is the first thing I would check.

How do I set up picture in picture viewing on a Direct TV DVR receiver?

It records two shows at once, can’t it display two live shows at once?

No.

PIP (picture in picture) has nothing at all to do with your Directv DVR.

I assume you think because it can either record 2 shows at the same time or record one while you are watching a different one that receiver can do PIP. It can’t. It can only output one program stream at a time through its AV connections.

Your TV has to be able to do PIP and you have to have your TV hooked up a certain way for it to work. In most instances, that means a antenna hooked up for one program stream and then a cable or satellite receiver connected by AV cables to the TV for the other.

Check your TV documentation.
