Approach using hand controls?

I need help trying to figure out how to get the best approach with my Nikon D40 to use manual controls? I Monolight purchased my first kit and strobe light and in dark rooms I am finding it difficult to get a more acute? Is there a device that you help? Do I need another light to illuminate so you can better see through the view finder? Any recommended books to help me with this? My first wedding is in August and I panicked. Thanks

Manual focus on D40 is difficult because the screen does not "snap" into focus as the old film SLR focus manual. This is because the D40 has been designed to be used primarily as an auto focus camera. In opening today's variable zoom lenses and a pentamirror the system the D40 viewfinder is also darker than cameras using larger lens opening ( "faster lenses) and pentaprisms true. First, make sure your AF assist lamp on the D40 is active. That should turn on automatically and is very bright and you can concentrate on dark rooms. Press Menu, pencil and then select the menu option 9. Make sure care is AF ON. Then, for now, try to focus AF, rather than approach manual. With the AF assist light, should work for any type of work that is reasonably close. In the custom menu settings (pencil), single zone selecting the approach. Use the center focus point, which is usually the most sensitive.
